Camp Tamarack
I joined the Camp Tamarack staff as a Field Instructor for the 2023 Fall Outdoor School season. Although it was a short stint, it was such a great way to end my time in Central Oregon by teaching all I had learned about the beautiful high desert. And because of my prior teaching and summer camp experience, it was easy for me to jump right in!
Every Monday and Wednesday, I met a new group of 10-15 fifth-grade students and introduced them to making scientific observations, learning about bark beetles and decomposition, and discovering how healthy our lake was based on what invertebrates we could find in it (we found so many crawdads!). In between lessons, I led team-building games and other camp activites, like canoeing and archery. I also mentored 2-3 high school counselors every week, gave them tips for managing their cabins at night, and encouraged them to try out teaching part of the lessons. |
